How much weight will i lose (about) in 5 months?

congrats!! .... That is a really high number, does that include pre-op diet loss too????? if not, what was your starting weight??? thanks!! just curious!

10 weeks = 88 lbs for me low carbs and lots of Protein

ohh ok! thats such a job well done. you must feel like a completely new person by now.

thanks!!! ... I was self pay ... and my doctor said that since i had lost so much weight within the last year on my own (66 pounds in 11 months), that I didn't need to do a pre-op diet... but since I was mostly vegetarian, i needed to increase my Protein so that i would heal better... :)

81/2 weeks and iv lost 57lb. Just another 57lb to go!

I'm half way and I'm really happy!

Did you follow a specific diet? or specific rule ... im suppose to start like regular meats, etc.. this weekend and i am so worried i will screw it up some way and not lose more.. i need a breakthrough with this.. im like a worry wort... over it.. !!! :D

How much do you have to lose????

I had over 100 pounds to lose and around 5 months out I had dropped around 90-95lbs.

There is no average since the percentage of weight loss is the primary indicator for weight loss surgery patients and not actual pounds lost.

A patient that has 100+ pounds to lose might lose more number of pounds as someone with only 70 pounds to lose, but it's the percentage of weight loss is what is used to figured "average weight loss" for bariatric patients.

I followed a very basic, low carb/high Protein meal plan. I ate 4 meals per day, each meal had a minimum of 15gr of Protein. This accomplished 2 things; 1) kept me within my calorie/carb/protein guideline 2) kept me from snacking which is heavily discouraged.

My plan stated 600-800 calories, NO more than 30-40gr of carbs (and this is ALL carbs, good/bad, white/complete/whole grain etc, a carb is a carb), and at least 60gr of protein.

I ate lots of meat, cheese, greek yogurt, and eggs once I got to regular food.

Carbs are my enemy when it comes to weight loss/gain, and like I said, I don't care what source of carb they are classified in.

I had a totally boring meal plan, but a little creativity and recipe tweaking made things much easier.

I am just like you. I am 29 with a bmi of 55. I have put myself on the "bariatric diet" before and did great with very little hunger for the first 4 weeks (only because I tricked my body with water). Then eating the same rice and Beans didn't really stick well into week 6. I am looking forward to being sleeved and being able to stick to it.

I have concerns about loosing too fast, but hopefully my daily exercise can be resumed quickly after surgery. My biggest fear is the energy factor. I'm struggling now with low energy days and i'm only in week two of the 4 week preop diet.

Thank you to everyone on this site for keeping me informed. My own diet blog will start in two weeks with the first full liquid diet week of my preop. Thanks for being there!

Depends on how you eat and control your carbs after sugery. I followed Tiffykins advice (read a lot on here preop) and stayed under 30 gr of carbs a day, 64 oz of Water, no soda, no caffine and 65+ grams of Protein day. Not as easy as it sounds but completely worth it when I hit goal...5 months out.

I also followed the low carb, high Protein diet pre surgery and lost 53 lbs while I waited for paperwork to go through. I had surgery less than 1 1/2 weeks ago and will continue with that until I am close to goal. I expect it'll be 6 months(ish)

I see others eating whatever they want and then complain of slow weight gain. Like everything it's what you put into it to a point. Others just lose faster or slower no matter what they do. But I will say that it seems those that put the effort in and follow the guidelines seems to lose most of the weight within a year.....a little more for those that have 200+ lbs to lose, and most seem to lose the bulk of it within 6 months.

I'm down 63lbs in 5 months and I've only been sleeved for 1 week. Most of that was on my own dieting. The sleeve just makes it faster.

These comments really give me hope because I am getting sleeved next week and am in a wedding in May... I have been really worried about what size I might be when it is time to order my dress compared to what size I will be when the wedding is here.... Thanks for all the info!

its so nice meeting you! when will you be sleeved? did you have a 3-6month diet? im confused if im actually supposed to try & lose weight or not. my primary dr told me not to but wouldnt insurance deny me if i dont lose something in the 6 months?

Insurance goes by the BMI at the time of your consultation. If your BMI is over 50, you wont lose so much weight you won't qualify. Your Bariatric Surgeon knows more about the process than your pcp. Stick to the advice they give you. Talk to their insurance specialist.

On the other hand, the nutritionist and psycholigist will quickly approve you when they see you have adapted sound eating habits. Focus on your goal. Thank God I had my husband telling me that the entire time. Six months seemed like forever! I just finished my 6 months and am about to be submitted for insurance approval. With God's will, I will start my preop diet in 2 weeks and be sleeved in 4 weeks.

I always tell my kids.........lots of people start the race running fast but the one who can endure to the end always wins!

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

      Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
